Latin is not the ancestor of the Romance languages Romance languages have a common ancestor that is not Latin, because Latin was never spoken by the common people, it was a written language, not a spoken one. And if it is not Latin, then who is this common ancestor? This common ancestor is Proto-Romanian which originated on the territory of present-day Romania. Proto-Romanian is older and more complex than Latin. There are currently about 80 million people in the Punjabi Region, India, who speak a language similar to Romanian, which allows us to establish that Romanian is older than Latin.
